Dr Lal is a clinician-scientist in cerebrovascular disease and in venous thromboembolism. He practices in two urban hospitals. He is also deeply involved in helping academic societies grow and mature the specialty of vascular surgery.
He is a leader in the PERT Program at the University of Maryland. He completed a VA-funded randomized trial on exercise interventions to accelerate thrombus resolution in patients with acute DVT. He has developed and patented novel 3D ultrasound algorithms to quantify venous thrombus volume. He is using machine learning and genomics to improve venous thromboembolism prediction of hospitalized patients.
He has matured the field of cognitive-mobility dysfunction in carotid stenosis. Through NIH funding, he is also investigating how the structure & biomechanics of carotid plaque impacts plaque disruption with subsequent stroke and cognitive dysfunction. He is National Co-Principal Investigator of CREST-2, an NIH trial in stroke-prevention. As Principal Investigator of the National Carotid Stenting Registry (C2R), he works with NIH and CMS to establish physician credentialing and clinical performance standards in carotid stenting.
Dr Lal founded the South Asian American Vascular Society in 2010 and was President in 2012-13. He is a member of the AVF for 25 years. He chaired the Research Committee, Membership Committee, Finance Committee, and Guidelines Committee. He was elected Treasurer in 2018, and President in 2020-21. He delivered the Strandness Keynote Lecture in 2024. He developed the country’s first multicenter collaborative Venous Registry, and the first integrated research center to conduct multicenter clinical trials. He has been a member of the Eastern Vascular Society for 25 years. He was elected Secretary in 2022 and President in 2024-25.
